Our mission

Beginning with the guqin, we help traditional culture find a living place in the present.

We believe understanding grows through encounters with music, texts and objects, and through the exchange between people. Through listening, study and shared practice, Gui Gu seeks to make tradition part of everyday experience and lifelong learning.

Rooted in Silicon Valley, we connect cultural practice, academic research and technological inquiry to explore how traditional culture can be studied, preserved, learned and shared in the age of AI. Grounded in tradition, with technology as a tool, we bring people of different backgrounds into conversation and shared discovery.

The meaning of Gui Gu

Gui Gu means returning to our roots and understanding our beginnings, while continuing to learn, reflect and practice in the present. Beginning with the guqin, we bring cultural heritage into conversation with the questions of our time.

The myriad things each return to their root. Returning to the root is called stillness; this is called returning to one's nature.

Why Gui Gu began

Gui Gu begins with a wish: to create a place where people who care about traditional culture can meet and explore together.
